In Harlem in 1987, Claireece "Precious" Jones is a 16-year-old African American girl born into a life no one would want. She's pregnant for the second time by her absent father, and at home she must wait hand and foot on her mother, an angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is chaotic and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and a secret – she can't read.

This movie deals with some themes that can be overwhelming to watch if you aren’t meeting it with the right headspace, and I think for me at the time I wasn’t. It does help itself in that respect though, there are moments when it cuts its own tension with just straight up ending a heavy scene with fading out to church music, which I might’ve found funny in other movies, but here it feels very inappropriate to feel that, so instead you are left with this feeling of “woah ok that over ok”. It’s a very unique creative choice which I feel lends well to the idea of telling the story through her eyes. I’m not a psychologist but I imagine that when things of that magnitude happen, they start to become normal because you gotta cope, so I’d guess that if that was your day to day, you would need to move on quick and process it as a standard practice, which feels very uncomfortable with an outsiders perspective.”
